England fans helped to keep their cool as temperatures soared
giffgaff helped England fans beat the heat with its keep your cool zone at BOXPARK Shoreditch
The activation comes as new research from giffgaff found that while nearly half of Brits (48%1) start looking forward to summer before it arrives, almost half (45%1) are left feeling hot and uncomfortable when it finally does.
The keep your cool zone forms part of the giffgaff Fair-play Summer Fund, helping people overcome the moments that make summer feel less fair.
Fans can still enter the giffgaff Fair-play Summer Fund for the chance to win a fix for other unfair summer moments.
Brits spend months waiting for summer, with almost a third (31%)1 dreaming of longer, warmer days in spring and 17%1 pining for the sunshine as soon as winter ends. But when summer finally arrives, the reality can feel less fair than the promise.
While six in 10 (62%1) Brits enjoy warmer summer weather, almost half (45%1) say feeling hot and uncomfortable gets in the way of enjoying the season. A further 46%1 struggle to sleep in the heat, 35%1 find it difficult to keep their homes cool and a third (33%1) say hot weather leaves them low on energy.
That means the thing people spend months looking forward to, like enjoying big sporting moments, can become the very thing stopping them from enjoying summer properly.
To help remove that barrier, mobile and broadband provider giffgaff brought its Fair-play Summer Fund to life by cooling Britons down ahead of one of the summer’s biggest sporting moments.
As England prepared for their quarter-final clash against Norway, thousands of supporters packed into fan zones across the country to cheer on the Three Lions. With temperatures hitting highs of more than 30 degrees for 10 consecutive days , giffgaff transformed a milk float into the giffgaff keep your cool zone at BOXPARK Shoreditch - a football-inspired cooling station giving fans a refreshing place to recharge before kick-off.
The station featured a cooling mist, similar to those used by the England coaching team in training to help players manage high temperatures ahead of matches.
The activation forms part of the giffgaff Fair-play Summer Fund, an initiative helping the nation tackle the unfair moments that stop summer living up to expectations.
Kate Dohaney, CEO at giffgaff, said: “Summer should be about making the most of the longer days and spending time with friends and family, whether that’s firing up the barbecue, settling in for the season’s biggest sporting moments, or cheering on the next generation of British talent. But for many people, the heat can quickly become uncomfortable and take the shine off the season.
“We’ve already helped people with some of this summer’s connectivity stings by providing unlimited data and broadband for less, so we wanted to take things a step further and help people keep their cool while making the most of everything summer has to offer.”
The research also found that Britain is a nation of committed sports fans. One in 10 (10%2) admit they have left an event early to catch a major sporting fixture, while 15% have watched a match on their phone during work. Almost a quarter (23%2) have streamed sporting events while on holiday abroad, determined not to miss a moment of the action.
Alongside helping people enjoy summer moments, giffgaff is continuing to tackle some of summer’s connectivity stings too, with unlimited mobile data plans from £14 or £20 a month3 and Full Fibre broadband from £5 a month for the first six months4, helping members stay connected without breaking the bank.
